The most shocking aspect of consciousness is that we are so collectively confused about it, in the modern world. Consciousness is somehow a problem for science and philosophy, in general. There are vitriolic and hate-strewn wars fought between “great thinkers” on the topic and there is no “answer” forthcoming.

Can you believe it? Somehow every single one of these people ignored everything about their experience as a human being, since birth, and also threw out the entirety of human history because it was too laden with what they could not identify and isolate, materially.

How sad.

For those who don’t need the system to identify a material for them, here’s the list of descriptions for consciousness, throughout knowable history.

Aether

The aether or ether is still somehow elusive to materialists because they simply ignore the massive amounts of evidence for this energy flow. Einstein, Maxwell, Planck, and more prominent scientists proposed aetheric reality, to one degree or another. To be fair, many would say the aether is a step down from pure consciousness, and they may be right about that. Even still, this pure energy state of plasmatic flow is pretty close to the most pure state and, therefore, makes the list. In this recent revisitation of the ancient theory of aether, the authors posit that there can be much healed and humanity may advance if we can rekindle our understanding of this lost layer of life energy.

Prana

Prana is the most elemental and basic life force or vital principle, according to Vedic and Indian tradition. Prana flows through the breath or, more accurately, through any conscious movement of the subtle forces of ourselves, or our consciousness. The two are indistinguishable, when you get down to it. Prana can be increased by intention, by breath focus, by movement, and by health and life affirming choices while Prana may be diminished by life blocking, slowing, retarding, or distorting efforts or choices. Prana flows everywhere it can and is forever in movement and presence, in all things and at all times.

Chi

More accurately spelled “qi”, this vital force underlying all life and motion in the universe is elucidated in ancient Chinese tradition. It is of central importance in most eastern healing traditions and there is no medical or physical treatment of ailment without addressing the issues of Qi strength, presence, flow, and blockage. Many studies have shown acupuncture and other methodologies utilized in Traditional Chinese Medicine and Classic Chinese Medicine to be more effective than medications, allopathic treatments, and other western modalities.

Soul or Spirit

While the two are technically different substances and bodies, they are used interchangeably by most in the West and so will be treated as one, here. The Soul or Spirit is understood to be the “true you”, beyond your physical body, in many western religions or spiritual traditions. This substance or energy is also said to exist beyond death and to be capable of connecting with other consciousnesses, outside of time or space boundaries, via the presence of universal Soul or Spiritual pathways.

Esse

The esse is the supreme essence, the most fundamental nature, the most universal substance that exists in all things at all times. The root is the same as that of the spiritual tradition of the Essenes and the antecedent, the Gnostics, both of whom intended to discover the most essential truths and aspects of life as spiritual beings, without intermediaries or restrictions on their thought and experience.

Vril

While there is a Nazi related ancillary group known as the Vril society, craft known as Vril craft, and members of the society aforementioned which may be colloquially referred to as “Vril”, the actual word simply refers to the universal life force energy that all humans possess, have access to, can develop further, and can harness and manipulate in order to produce seemingly superhuman or paranormal phenomenon.

Orgone

Wilhelm Reich reinvented the Universal Life Force energy that so many ancient traditions and religions had already classified and described as he associated the same with the human orgasm, and thus dubbed this energy “orgone”. The human orgasm, he believed, was the key point at which the largest amount of this energy flowed through the human being and, therefore, had the potential to create and produce so much more than just an instantaneous experience. His life’s work was built around harnessing this energy both within the human and from the environment in general, as well. I create Orgone Accumulators to assist with the gathering and use of this universal force.

Subtle Energy

This is a newer term, coined by the sorts of “new age” movements of modern spirituality, used to describe these same old energies that all humans all throughout history have tried to define, capture, use, and understand. The subtle energy has even been studied by materialists and has made some progress in becoming accepted on that front. Here is one clumsy effort to describe what the subtle energy enthusiasts already knew.

Akasha

Akasha is yet another Sanskrit word of the Vedic and Indian culture that attempts to describe the universality of presence, or what we would call consciousness, that flows through literally everything at every time and, in this case, is more closely associated with space or emptiness. Many new-age points of view also refer to the “Akashic Records”, which would simply mean the information that is retained in all space and time, holofractally.hough a big deal is made about what it looks like and where it is, which literally ignores its definition: that it is all places and times.

The Force

Though many will ignore it because of its fame in pop culture’s Star Wars, The Force is an adaptation of everything described above. George Lucas even names those best at understanding and utilizing The Force, Jedi. Jedi is a word he borrows from the ancient concept of djedi, which are devices used not unlike antennas in order to gather and direct the flow of this universal energy or force.

What all of these agree upon is this: consciousness is universal, it is indestructible, it will express through every form in existence to the level of capability of that structure and form, any living being can direct it, some forms and beings are so advanced and complex that they can direct it to greater levels than others, it can even come to identify itself and reflect upon itself in an advanced enough form or structure, which we then call sentience.
