To the Brave and Valiant People Who Aim to Protect and Serve;
We give you all our respect. We know you do one of the most difficult jobs humans have yet created: you are supposed to keep us safe from all manner of harm in an infinitely harmful world. We know that you work from the very core of your soul, from the very center of your love for humanity. We celebrate your care and your dedication to what you know is right. We are eternally grateful for the sacrifices you should never have to make, but do every day.
We know you face your darkest fears to keep us from ours. We know you dig to the deepest level of self in order to fight for what we collectively value, in our nation: you fight for goodness, for sanctity, for respect, for freedom, for our rights, and for our ability to thrive in peace.
And we know you could never be compensated enough. We know that we do an abysmal job of paying you back. We see that you often scrape by, living paycheck to paycheck, and that you are sometimes left without support at all, forgotten by the society that begged for your help. We know there are servicemen and women living on the streets, suffering from mental illness created from the very jobs we would not do ourselves. And we can not forgive the system that has let them down, let them suffer. We know you deserve more than you’ve ever been given.
There are people who sully the name of the profession in every sector, but perhaps it cannot sting worse than it does when they profess the values you do and when they deceptively say they uphold those utterly necessary promises you make to the people of this nation. For trust to be effective, it cannot withstand such abuses… and yet it does. We still trust you. We still want to work with you. We still want to uphold a promise we make to each other, from citizen to service-people and from your ranks to the masses on the street: we are in this together.
There has always been and always may be an element that does not uphold our values, does not work for the betterment of all, does not uplift the common people and the ranks of those in service, and these people will use any sliver of advantage they can to bolster their own ventures and restrict the rest of ours. These forces will use citizenry by sowing the seeds of hatred for our own protectors, pointing to the few that have poisoned your role in our society. These forces will use you by asking you to stand against, hold back, fight, imprison, or kill your fellow people.
We know that, if that time ever comes, you will look into your hearts, remember the core of what you are, what you stand for, and what you’ve fought for, and stand next to your brothers and sisters. We all live together, or we all die together. There is no force that can divide a people united, and we choose to stay united with you, as we have never truly been apart. No matter how much certain elements have asked us to hate you and no matter how many have fallen into that trap, we will never forget, for the majority of us still remember this truth: there is no difference between us, whether we wear the badge or the uniform or the layperson’s attire. We are one people of one nation and we stand united.
Please remember us always, please do not forget that we are with you. We can do anything together.
